The client wished to regenerate the existing property and turn it into a modern family home which responded to their lifestyle. The proposal required preserving the front elevation and part of the side elevations, while extending the rear of the building onto a large garden. All new work had to match the existing fabric.
Charlton Brown designed an extensive leisure-themed basement including a swimming pool, gym, bar, cinema and a snooker room with a large garage. The existing and new levels were connected with a central circular staircase lit from above by a domed roof light.
The design team worked closely with the client to produce modern interiors, influenced by styles which were established when the building was originally built. The rear of the property responds sensitively to the existing terrain, opening onto a wide garden with terraces to create panoramic views over a variety of seasonally flowering plants.
